What is a forex trading journal?
A trading journal is a record of every trade you take, along with why you took it. Logging your reasoning, risk and outcome turns scattered results into patterns you can act on — showing which setups actually make money, and which habits quietly cost you. It is the difference between remembering your trading and measuring it.
Is the FxScouts Trading Journal free?
Yes — the core journal is free, with unlimited trades, broker syncing and your performance analytics included. Pro is $9 a month and adds advanced dashboard breakdowns, unlimited saved trade drafts and priority support. You can try Pro for $0 first, and no card is needed to start journaling.
Do you need my broker password?
No. We never ask for your account password. MT4 and MT5 connect with your investor password, which is read-only and enforced by your broker — trades can never be placed or modified. The Expert Advisor option needs no password at all, and cTrader uses OAuth, so no credentials are shared.
Which brokers and platforms can I connect?
MT4, MT5 and cTrader connect directly. MT4 and MT5 link via an investor password or an Expert Advisor; cTrader uses secure OAuth through Spotware. Once connected, closed trades sync automatically every 15 minutes. If your broker is not supported, you can still import your trades from a spreadsheet.
Can I import my existing trading history?
Yes. A one-time History Importer for MT4 and MT5 reads your full closed-trade history from inside your terminal and sends it here for review before anything is saved. You can also import a spreadsheet export — CSV, Excel, OpenDocument or Numbers — from most brokers.
My broker uses odd symbol names. Will that break my stats?
No. Brokers label the same market differently — gold might be XAUUSD, GOLD or GC, often with suffixes like EURUSD.r. Symbol mapping lines those up with standard instruments so your trades group correctly. It is non-destructive: it changes how trades are grouped for statistics, never the original records.
How is this different from a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet stores your trades; this reads them. You get an Edge score out of 100 built from win quality, risk discipline, consistency and drawdown control, plus your single biggest opportunity, what each mistake has cost you in currency, and a heatmap of when you trade best.
Do I need to be an experienced trader?
No. The journal works from your first trade, and a guided tour walks you through each area. Analytics sharpen as your history grows — most metrics need around five trades before they are meaningful — so the value builds as you use it rather than requiring a track record upfront.
